Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose clothes that suit the occasion and know how to look after clothes and personal belongings, such as washing, drying and folding, and which jobs need an adult's help, such as ironing or sewing a button.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - School uniform with going to school; a raincoat with a rainy day - Hanging out with drying them so they do not smell; folding with keeping them tidy - Muddy with washing before the mud dries; a button off with an adult sewing it back on - Socks with washing every day; a hat with brushing it and keeping its shape

How to use it in class

Use after teaching dressing and caring for clothes. About 6-8 minutes. - Split the class into 3-4 teams that take turns answering one pair each, so everyone speaks - Before round 3, show a real creased shirt or one with a loose button - If many get round 3 wrong, ask "Can we fix this ourselves, or who needs to help?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook, which shows who still mixes up jobs they can do and jobs that need an adult.

Common sticking points

- Round 3 has both an adult sewing a button back on and an adult sewing up a seam, which look very alike; children may swap the loose button and the split seam. Point to the words back on, which go with the button - In round 2, swapping wash and hanging out because both involve water; ask which step makes it clean and which makes it dry - In round 4, matching shoes to washing every day because shoes get dirty every day
