What children will practise

Get to know familiar occupations: what each one does, how they dress, where they work and what tools they use, and see that every job matters to the community.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each, linking jobs to what goes with them - Police officer with keeping people safe; rice farmer with growing rice - Nurse with white uniform; cook with a hat and apron; firefighter with fire-protective kit - Fisherman with the sea; shop assistant with a shop - Barber with scissors and a comb; painter with brushes and paint

How to use it in class

Use in a lesson on jobs in the community, or before children interview a parent about their work. About 6 minutes. - Play as a team contest; a team scores when it matches a pair and names one more thing that job does - Afterwards, children mime a job for friends to guess - If many miss round 2, show real photos of police and nursing uniforms - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, swapping nurse and cook, since cooks can wear white too; point out that the cook's answer is a hat and an apron - In round 4, unsure which of carpenter and barber uses scissors - In round 1, swapping doctor and police officer because both help people
