What children will practise

Order the steps of simple cooking: a sandwich, a fruit smoothie, rice in a rice cooker, and clearing up the kitchen afterwards, with the focus on preparing before assembling and keeping clean.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Sandwich: wash hands > get bread and filling > spread and add filling > close and cut - Smoothie: wash the fruit > cut it up > into the blender with water > blend and pour - Rice: measure > rinse > add water in proportion > press cook - Clearing up: put leftovers away > wash the dishes > wipe the table and stove > take out the rubbish

How to use it in class

Use before a practical lesson making sandwiches or rice, so children know the order before they start. 8 minutes. - Play solo, then have everyone chant the order for round 3 together - For round 2 and any cutting, stress that knives and the blender need an adult present, since the game does not say so - If many miss round 3, ask "If we add the water before rinsing, what happens to the water we measured?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 3, rinsing before measuring because at home adults rinse straight in the pot; explain that you measure first to know how much water to add - In round 4, taking out the rubbish before washing up, which is fine in real life; the order here is not forced, so listen to the reasoning - In round 1, swapping spread and fill with close and cut, since some children cut the bread first
