Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Sort new Grade 4 ideas: raw data versus information, outdoor versus indoor jobs, organic versus chemical farming, and acceptable versus copyright-infringing uses of others' work.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - Everyone's exam marks and each day's sales are raw data; the class average and the month's total sales are information - Rice farmer and gardener work outdoors; accountant and bank clerk indoors - Compost and biological pest control are organic farming - Citing the source and asking permission are fine; downloading a pirated film infringes copyright

How to use it in class

Use after teaching data and information, or before a report that needs citations. 6-8 minutes. - Play in teams; in round 1, teams suggest more information from the exam marks, such as the top score - Use round 4 to agree the class rules for citing sources - If many miss round 1, ask "Has this number been worked out, or is it a list written down as it came?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, putting everyone's exam marks under information because marks look like results; point out they have not yet been processed - In round 3, putting biological pest control under chemical because ชีววิธี is unfamiliar; explain it uses living things such as predatory insects - In round 4, putting copying and calling it yours under fine, having seen it in group work
