    • stacking goods over and over
    • thinking of something new
    Read the explanation

What children will practise

Sort skills machines can easily or hardly take over, data you can share versus keep private, thinking-and-design versus doing-and-testing stages of programming, and short-term versus long-term goals.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - Calculating lots of figures and stacking goods are easy for machines; understanding feelings and new ideas are hard - Nickname and hobbies can be shared; password and ID card number stay private - Analysing the problem and drawing a flowchart are thinking stages; writing code and testing are doing stages - Passing this term and saving for a book are short-term; a degree is long-term

How to use it in class

Use late in Grade 6 to link technology with life planning. 6-8 minutes. - Play solo, then each child writes one short-term and one long-term goal of their own - For round 2, children check their own social profiles for anything from the private group - If many miss round 1, ask "A calculator or a best friend: which comforts you better?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, putting nickname under private because teachers say not to share personal details online, which is good caution; explain the game is sorting by level of risk - In round 3, putting drawing the flowchart under doing because you actually draw it - In round 4, putting saving for a book under long-term because saving sounds long-term
