What children will practise

Practises basic composition: focal point, balance, empty space, harmony, how position and size change a picture, and the textures different painting techniques give. Supports indicator ศ 1.1 ป.2/2 on using art elements.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, match 4 pairs each - focal point goes with the part you want people to see first - small in a wide empty space goes with lonely; pushed against the edge goes with cramped - overlapping goes with showing near and far - dabbing dots goes with a grainy texture; wet-in-wet goes with colours bleeding together

How to use it in class

This set is abstract for Grade 2, so play it after showing an example picture for each idea, about 10 minutes, in pairs. During the position round, draw the same circle in the middle, against the edge and tiny in a corner, and ask how each feels. If the techniques round goes badly, try dabbing and scratching on real paper next lesson. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Principles round: balance and harmony sound alike to children and get swapped. Use a level pair of scales as a hook for balance. - Size round: "draw it big" and "overlap" may swap since both relate to nearness. Draw two overlapping hills. - Position round: "centred = steady and formal" versus "off-centre = lively" is hard for children to reason out.
