The visual elements are in every work of art.
These are what make a work sit right.
Before you play
Practises using visual-element vocabulary correctly: line, shape, form, texture, colour, light and shade, space, size; the design principles unity, balance, focal point and rhythm; and the feelings textures give. Fits indicator ศ 1.1 ป.4/1.
4 rounds, match 4 pairs each - shape goes with an enclosed 2D area; form goes with something with 3D volume - space goes with the open sky around a bird - unity goes with every part belonging together; rhythm goes with repetition that creates movement - spiky goes with danger and alertness
Use as vocabulary practice after teaching the visual elements, about 8 minutes, in pairs. Before the texture round, pass round real things to touch: sandpaper, a towel, a smooth tile. If the principles round goes badly, project one picture and have children point to where they see rhythm, balance and the focal point. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- Shape and form can still swap in Grade 4 since the Thai names are so alike. Use the words 2D and 3D in the answers as the clue. - Unity and balance often swap since both sound like "everything fits". Point to "two sides" in the balance definition. - Examples round: "size = big tree and small flower" and "space = open sky" may swap if children read the wide sky as size.
