It reads clearly from a distance, and has one clear focal point.
Before you play
Reviews Grade 5 art across strands: a print is a left-right mirror of its block, a sharp raises a note by a semitone, what makes a good poster, mudmee silk from the Northeast, the first step of analysing art, and what contemporary art focuses on.
6 questions, 3 options, one unit each - How does a print compare with its block? (mirrored left to right) - What does a sharp do? (raises the note a semitone) - What makes a good poster? (readable from afar with a clear focal point) - Which region is mudmee silk from? (the Northeast)
A review before the end-of-term test, about 6 minutes, teams competing. For the print question, have children write their name and hold the paper up to a window or mirror to see the reversal. For any question most teams miss, open the topic set next lesson: reading notes for the sharp, printmaking for the print question. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- Prints: children often pick "exactly the same", thinking a print is a copy. Print a letter from an eraser or potato stamp to show the reversal. - Sharp: the distractor "raises a whole tone" is close, so children unsure of it choose it. Show on a keyboard that white to the adjacent black key is a semitone. - Poster: some pick "as much information as possible", thinking more is better.
