What children will practise

Put simple kitchen jobs a Grade 1 child can help with in order: preparing fruit as a snack, laying the table, washing up and storing leftovers, with attention to hygiene and safety such as washing hands first and having an adult help with knives.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Snack: wash your hands > wash the fruit > cut or peel it with an adult's help > arrange it on a plate - Laying the table: wipe the table > plates > cutlery > glasses - Washing up: scrape the food off > wash with detergent > rinse the suds away > stand to drain - Leftovers: let it cool > lidded container > close the lid > into the fridge

How to use it in class

Use in a kitchen-skills lesson or just before a real snack-making activity. 8-10 minutes. - Have children mime each step before ordering it, such as washing hands or standing plates to drain - Play in pairs who must agree before submitting - If many get round 4 wrong, ask "What happens if we put hot food straight into the fridge?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, swapping cutlery and glasses, since nothing forces one before the other; accept it in discussion and explain the game uses plates, cutlery, then glasses - In round 4, putting food in the fridge before letting it cool, thinking the fridge cools it faster - In round 1, washing the fruit before washing hands; stress that hands must be clean before touching any food
