What children will practise

Know what a computer is for, what the keyboard and mouse do, use a computer in a healthy way, save work before shutting down, and keep equipment safe from water and sun.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - A computer is for typing work, looking things up and communicating - You type on the keyboard; a mouse is for pointing and clicking - Long spells: rest your eyes and get up now and then - Before shutting down: save your work and close programs - Care: dust it and keep drinks away (not a soaking-wet cloth)

How to use it in class

Use in the first computer-room lesson as shared rules before anyone starts. 5 minutes. - Play as a class on the screen, then children point to the keyboard, mouse and screen on their own machine for questions 2 and 3 - If many miss question 5, ask "If the power goes off before you save, is your work still there?" - Question 4 can set up eye-rest breaks during computer lessons - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 4, choosing keep going until done, then rest, because teachers often say finish your work - In question 5, choosing just turn off the screen, having seen adults do only that - In question 6, choosing a wet cloth, since tables at home are wiped with one
