Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Work safely: assess the dangers first, wear personal protective equipment, stop using damaged tools, beware of fumes in unventilated spaces, lift correctly, and know what to do after an accident.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - First rule: assess the dangers before starting - PPE: gloves, safety glasses and a mask (not medicine and bandages) - A damaged tool: stop using it and report it - Unventilated spaces: chemical fumes build up - An accident: stop work, give first aid and report it

How to use it in class

Use before a practical lesson with tools or farm chemicals. 5-6 minutes. - Play as a class, then walk round the workshop to find the protective equipment - For question 6, role-play a friend cut by a craft knife: who does what, in what order? - If many miss question 2, separate protecting before injury from treating after it - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 2, choosing medicine, bandages and plasters, seeing them as safety equipment too - In question 3, choosing repair it yourself, having studied repairs already - In question 6, choosing first aid and tell no one, out of fear of being told off
