Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Put daily personal hygiene routines in order, handwashing, brushing teeth, bathing and getting ready for bed, so children can do them independently in the right sequence.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds, 4 cards each - Handwashing: wet hands, soap all over, rinse, dry - Brushing teeth: toothpaste on the brush, brush everywhere, rinse the mouth, rinse and dry the brush - Bathing: pour water all over, soap, rinse off, towel dry - Bedtime: bath, brush teeth, tidy up, go to bed on time

How to use it in class

Suits Grade 1 early in the year; about 5 minutes. - Read every card aloud before ordering and mime it, soaping, brushing - Have children act out the class's chosen order; if it looks odd, everyone sees it is wrong - After round 1, take the class to wash hands at the sink - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 4: tidying up could come before the bath in real life, so children who do it that way at home are marked wrong; say the game uses one order but homes can differ - Round 2: rinsing the brush and rinsing the mouth may be swapped, as some children rinse the brush first - Round 1: some soap before turning on the tap because liquid soap is right there; show that dry hands do not lather all over
