Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn how to stay safe: strangers, sharp objects, fire and the 199 number, electric sockets, playing near roads, and surviving if you fall into water.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - A stranger asks you along: refuse and tell an adult (distractor: go if they seem kind) - Keep sharp things out of small children's reach - In a fire, get out and call 199 without collecting belongings - Never poke fingers or objects into sockets - Playing near roads is very dangerous; in water, shout for help and float

How to use it in class

Use in the safety unit; about 6-8 minutes. - Read the questions and options aloud, then have everyone tap at once - After question 6, if there is space, practise the starfish float lying on the floor - For question 3, walk through your classroom's fire exit route - Some young children may be frightened by drowning or fire; stay calm and stress that knowing what to do keeps you safe - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 6: 'thrash hard to reach the bank' sounds like survival and most children choose it; explain thrashing tires you and makes you sink faster - Question 1: 'go if they seem kind' matches how young children judge people by manner; stress not going even with a kind stranger - Question 3: 'pack important things, then leave' makes children who love their toys or pets hesitate - Question 4: 'you may play with it if an adult is there' sounds safe because of the word adult
