Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose healthy food and drink: water over fizzy drinks, the effect of sweets, how many meals a day, why breakfast matters, and washing fruit before eating.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - The healthiest food: vegetables and fruit (distractors: sweet boxed juice, fruit-flavoured snacks) - Drink water instead of fizzy drinks - Too many sweets cause tooth decay and weight gain - Eat 3 meals a day; do not skip breakfast because it fuels learning - Wash fruit before eating

How to use it in class

Use in the food unit, just before lunch to link with a real meal; about 5 minutes. - Read each question aloud and have children hold up 1, 2 or 3 fingers before tapping - For question 1, bring a real juice box and look at its sugar; children see fruit-flavoured is not fruit - For question 5, ask what children ate this morning without blaming anyone who did not eat - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: sweet boxed juice and fruit-flavoured snacks both contain the word fruit, so Grade 1 children pick them on sight; point out that 'sweet' and 'flavoured' signal sugar - Question 4: '6 big meals' may tempt children who love food or think eating more makes you grow - Question 5: 'keeps you full till evening' sounds like a benefit and catches children who do not read all the options - Question 2: fizzy drinks appears both in the question and as an option, and children who match words will tap it
