Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Sort kinds of movement: high versus low effort, on the spot versus travelling, indoor versus outdoor exercise, and safe versus risky behaviour during play.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, 2 baskets each - High or low effort: running, reading, skipping, resting - On the spot or travelling: stretching, running, turning, walking - Indoor or outdoor: exercises, running on the field, yoga, cycling - Safe or risky: warming up, running on a wet floor, well-fitting shoes, playing so rough you keep falling

How to use it in class

Use in PE before going outside, or indoors on a rainy day; about 5 minutes. - In round 2, have children stand and do each movement before dragging, stretching and turning on the spot, then walking in a circle - Read every card aloud; some Grade 1 children cannot yet read 'warm up' - Tie round 4 to school rules, such as no running in the toilets - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: exercises and yoga can be done outdoors, and indoor cycling exists (exercise bikes); children who have seen this will sort differently from the key; listen, then say the game goes by where it is usually done - Round 2: turning may seem like travelling because the body moves a lot; try it and notice the feet stay put - Round 1: resting is not really movement, so some children are unsure which basket it belongs in
