Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn why sleep and rest matter: how many hours children need, what too little sleep does, what to avoid before bed, a good bedroom, and resting the eyes while reading.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Primary children need 9 to 11 hours' sleep - Too little sleep makes you drowsy and unable to follow lessons - Avoid phones and heavy meals before bed - Sleep repairs the body and helps memory - Rest your eyes by looking into the distance; a good bedroom is quiet, dark enough and airy

How to use it in class

Use in the healthy habits unit; about 5-6 minutes. - Read the options aloud, as several are long - After question 1, have children say their bedtime and count their hours of sleep together - After question 5, have the class look far out of the window for 20 seconds - Send questions 3 and 6 home as talking points with parents - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 6: 'a TV on quietly to help you sleep' is how many homes work, so children choose from experience; advise rather than criticise families - Question 3: 'drinking warm milk and reading' and 'taking a warm bath and brushing teeth' are good habits, so children who miss that the question asks what to avoid will pick them - Question 2: 'no effect if you catch up at the weekend' is a belief children hear from adults - Question 1: all three ranges of hours are numbers Grade 1 children cannot yet picture
