A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
The five groups give different nutrients, so you need them all.
Each nutrient has its own work in the body.
Too much of anything does harm.
Before you play
Learn the five food groups with examples, what each nutrient does, the harm of overdoing certain foods, and the role of each meal in the day.
4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Food group to examples, e.g. group 2 carbohydrates with rice, flour, taro - Nutrient to benefit, e.g. protein builds and repairs the body, calcium strengthens bones and teeth - Food to problem when overdone, e.g. very salty food with overworked kidneys, fizzy drinks with hidden sugar - Meal to role, e.g. snacks with choosing fruit over sweets
Use in the five food groups unit; about 6 minutes. - Read the cards aloud, and keep a food-pyramid or five-groups picture beside the game - In round 1, explain that dried beans are group 1 protein, not group 5 fat. Do not score that pair from the game - Tie round 4 to today's school lunch and which groups it contains - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 1: the game puts beans in group 5 (fats), but dried beans are group 1 protein in Thailand's five food groups. Accept group 1 and explain that the game prompt does not match the textbook classification - Round 2: vitamins and calcium may swap for children who do not know calcium is a mineral, not a vitamin - Round 3: fried food (high fat) and sweets (weight gain) overlap, so fried food may be paired with weight gain - Round 4: children may not see why dinner should be moderate
