What children will practise

Understand how bodies grow: what helps growth, measuring with weight and height, why children grow differently, the role of calcium and exercise, and how often to weigh and measure.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Good growth needs balanced food, exercise and enough sleep (distractor: lots of milk alone is enough) - Growth is measured by weight and height - Children grow differently because of genes and care - Calcium strengthens bones; exercise strengthens muscles and bones - Weigh and measure once a term

How to use it in class

Pair with the school's weighing and measuring day; about 5 minutes. - Read the questions aloud and let children answer individually - For question 3, make sure no one compares classmates' height or weight mockingly; stress differences are normal - After the game, have children record their own weight and height and compare with last term - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: 'lots of milk alone is enough' matches milk adverts children see often, so many pick it; stress balanced food, exercise and sleep too - Question 2: clothes and shoe size seem valid because parents notice when clothes get tight; explain weight and height are more precise - Question 5: some young children really believe exercise makes you taller straight away - Question 6: 'once a year is enough' is close to the answer and catches children who do not know school measures every term
