What children will practise

Put care routines in order: first aid for a graze, the stages of exercise, helping a friend who faints, and choosing food safely when shopping.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds, 4 cards each - Graze: helper washes hands, clean the wound with clean water, apply antiseptic, cover with a plaster - Exercise: warm up, stretch, exercise, cool down and drink water - A friend faints: lay them flat, raise the legs, call a teacher or adult, call 1669 if they do not come round - Buying food: check the expiry date, check the packaging, check the shop is clean, then decide

How to use it in class

Use in the first aid unit; about 5-6 minutes. - Read the cards aloud, then play in teams - After round 1, demonstrate with plasters and clean water and let children try on a doll's arm or a friend's - In round 3, children must call a teacher or adult first. The adult then decides about 1669 and positioning; do not use the game order to judge real first aid - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: calling a teacher or adult is always first. Children must not position or treat a fainted friend themselves, and the game order is not real first-aid guidance - Round 4: checking expiry, packaging and shop hygiene can come in any order in real life; a child who orders them differently has not reasoned wrongly - Round 2: warming up and stretching may swap, as many schools stretch first - Round 1: children often forget the helper's handwashing and put cleaning the wound first
