What children will practise

Know what addictive substances are, that alcohol and cigarettes harm health even though legal, why children must never drink, and practise effective refusal, including what a good friend should do.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Addictive substances make the body dependent - If offered, refuse and tell an adult (distractor: try it just once) - Effective refusal is clear words and walking away - Children must never drink because the brain is still developing - If a friend uses drugs, urge them to stop and tell an adult (distractor: urge them to stop but tell no one)

How to use it in class

Use in the substances unit; about 6 minutes. - Play solo so children answer for themselves without peer pressure - After question 3, have pairs role-play: one offers, the other refuses clearly and walks away - For question 6, discuss that telling an adult is not telling tales but helping a friend - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 6: 'urge them to stop but tell no one' matches children's reluctance to tell tales, so many pick it; show the friend needs adult help - Question 3: 'laugh and change the subject' is what children really do to keep friends; point out the person will ask again - Question 1: 'only illegal substances' reflects the belief that drugs means illegal things; question 4 helps correct it - Question 5: 'because children cannot buy it' is the reason children actually see in daily life
