Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Understand energy balance, using BMI to judge weight, the danger of starving yourself, healthy weight control for children, what junk food is, and why water matters.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Energy in and energy out should balance - BMI shows whether weight suits height - Dieting by starving is dangerous and causes nutrient shortage - Control weight with balanced portions and exercise (distractor: only vegetables at every meal) - High-energy, low-nutrient food is junk food; water carries nutrients and removes waste

How to use it in class

Use with weighing day or in the nutrition unit; about 6 minutes. - Play solo and avoid discussing any child's weight in front of the class - For question 1, draw a balance, energy in versus energy out, and have children name activities that use energy - For question 6, ask how many glasses of water children have had today, then top up before carrying on - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 4: 'only vegetables at every meal' sounds very healthy, so children choose it; explain growing children need protein and energy - Question 3: 'works if you only skip breakfast' matters because some children really skip breakfast for lack of time; advise gently - Question 2: BMI is a new term and may be guessed as blood fat because it sounds medical - Question 5: 'clean food' is a term children hear online without knowing what it means
