What children will practise

Understand body and mood changes at puberty: when they start, that they are normal for everyone, hygiene at this age, how hormones affect mood, whom to ask, and not comparing your body with friends'.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Puberty starts around 10 to 12 - Changes are normal for everyone (distractor: not normal if earlier than friends) - Ask parents, teachers or doctors about your body - More sweat means bathing more often - Mood swings come from hormones; do not compare bodies, as everyone grows at their own pace

How to use it in class

Use to open the 'changes with age' unit; about 6 minutes. The topic is sensitive. - Play solo on children's own devices rather than in teams, and do not show individual answers - Set up an anonymous question box afterwards and answer the questions next lesson - After question 6, restate the class rule that nobody teases anyone about their body - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 6: 'you should, to know whether you are normal' reflects children's real worries at this age, so they choose it; suggest asking an adult instead of comparing - Question 2: early developers may genuinely feel 'not normal if earlier than friends'; reassure them it is normal - Question 3: searching unknown websites is what embarrassed children do; explain the information may be wrong or needlessly scary - Question 1: '6 to 8' may tempt children who have seen a sibling or friend change early
