A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
How much of each food group you should eat in a day.
Rice and starches sit at the base of the flag, so they come in the largest amount.
Oil, sugar and salt sit at the tip of the flag, so they come sparingly.
Before you play
Use the Thai food guide flag: which groups to eat most and least, the recommended daily sugar limit, using the sweet-fat-salt label to compare products, and building a balanced one-plate meal.
6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - The food guide flag shows daily proportions of each group - Rice and starches should be eaten most - Oil, sugar and salt should be eaten least - No more than 6 teaspoons of sugar a day (distractor: at least 6) - The sweet-fat-salt label helps pick healthier products; a balanced one-plate meal has rice, protein and vegetables
Use in the Grade 6 nutrition unit; about 6 minutes. - Keep a picture of the food guide flag beside the game and have children point to the tiers in questions 2 and 3 - For question 4, spoon 6 teaspoons of sugar into a glass and compare with the sugar in a can of fizzy drink - For question 6, analyse a one-plate canteen dish such as basil rice and ask what it lacks - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Question 4: 'at least 6 teaspoons' uses the same number as the answer, differing only in at least versus no more than, so children who just remember 6 slip - Question 2: children who think protein matters most pick meat; point out the flag puts rice and starches at the base - Question 3: 'very sweet fruit' looks like something to limit, so children may choose it because of the word sweet - Question 1: 'the energy in each dish' shows confusion between the food guide flag and the nutrition label
