What children will practise

Practises telling past from present through objects and events in children's lives (ox-cart versus car, yesterday versus now), and separating Thai customs and food from things that came from abroad. Fits indicator ส 4.1 ป.1/1 on time and periods.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, sort 4 items into 2 groups - ox-cart and oil lamp were used in the past; car and light bulb are used now - went to school yesterday and moved up to Grade 1 last year have happened; studying right now and doing homework today are happening now - the wai and Songkran are Thai; handshakes and Christmas came from abroad - tom yum kung and som tam are Thai; pizza and sushi are foreign

How to use it in class

Open a unit on time and the past, about 6 minutes, in teams. Read the item names aloud and hold up pictures of an ox-cart or oil lamp if you have them. In the events round, have children add their own sentence, such as "I ate breakfast this morning", and classmates decide whether it has happened. Finish by asking children to find out from grandparents what they used long ago. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Events round: some put "doing homework today" under already happened, since they may have finished it. Accept the reasoning and say the game counts it as today. - Handshakes: children see them daily on TV and at school, so think they are Thai. - Oil lamp: many city children do not know it; show a picture.
