What children will practise

Practises knowledge of Thai culture and traditions: the month of Songkran, the purpose of Loy Krathong, how to wai an elder, why traditions are preserved, when to wear Thai dress, and respecting others' cultures. Fits indicator ส 2.1 ป.2/3.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, 3 options each - When is Songkran? (April) - What is Loy Krathong for? (asking forgiveness of, and thanking, the waters) - How do you wai an elder? (press palms together and bow the head) - When is Thai dress suitable? (merit-making and traditional festivals)

How to use it in class

Play in the run-up to Songkran or Loy Krathong, about 7 minutes, whole class. After the wai question, have everyone stand and wai the teacher, practising the hand height for elders. After the Loy Krathong question, ask what else we can do to thank the river, such as not throwing litter in it. For a question many miss, show photos of the real festival and ask again. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Loy Krathong: the distractor "celebrating Thai New Year" is Songkran, so children who mix the two festivals pick it. Hook: Songkran plays with water, Loy Krathong thanks the water. - The wai: some pick "palms together at the chest only", the acknowledging gesture they see adults use. - Respecting other cultures: "invite them to do things our way" sounds friendly, so some choose it.
