The kingdoms stood on different river basins.
Before you play
Sort several strands of social studies in one game: ASEAN countries that are archipelagos versus mainland ones, the jobs of the legislature versus the courts, Thai kingdoms by river basin, and actions that respect or violate rights.
4 sorting rounds, dragging 4 cards into 2 baskets - Archipelago or mainland: Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Laos - Legislature or judiciary: making laws, judging cases, scrutinising the government, interpreting the law - Yom basin or Chao Phraya basin: Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Si Satchanalai, Thonburi - Respecting or violating rights: letting everyone study, barring girls from school, hearing everyone's views, forcing everyone to think alike
Use as a revision game before a mid-term or final, since it spans several units; about 5 minutes. - Play one round at a time and after each answer ask which unit it came from, to tie it back to the lessons - Solo mode on tablets suits a class that has finished all the units; otherwise play in teams - If many miss round 2, write the three branches on the board and ask who makes laws and who judges cases, then replay - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 2, scrutinising the government: children often think it is the courts' job because it sounds like judging; stress that parliament checks the government - Round 2, interpreting the law: may go to the legislature because it says law; point out that making and interpreting laws are separate branches - Round 3, Si Satchanalai and Thonburi are less familiar than Sukhothai and Ayutthaya; show a river map, Thonburi faces Bangkok across the Chao Phraya - Round 1: most get Laos (ASEAN's only landlocked country), but the Philippines may be misplaced by children who have never seen the map
