What children will practise

Put social studies sequences in order: Sukhothai kings by reign, the steps for passing a law, cause and effect in market prices, and levels of government from local to national.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds, arrange 4 cards - Kings Si Inthrathit, Ban Mueang, Ramkhamhaeng, Maha Thammaracha I - Propose a bill, debate in parliament, vote to approve, proclaim it - Goods run short, price rises, producers make more, price falls - Subdistrict administrative organisation, municipality, provincial administrative organisation, central government

How to use it in class

Use as a mid-unit review; about 5 minutes. - Before round 1, mention that Ban Mueang and Ramkhamhaeng were brothers, sons of Si Inthrathit, which makes the order easier - In round 3, have teams tell it aloud as one story, e.g. eggs get dear, so farms keep more hens - If round 2 goes badly, role-play it: the class proposes a rule, debates, votes by show of hands, then posts it up - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: Maha Thammaracha I (Phaya Lithai) is unfamiliar and may be placed early because of the 'I'; stress the numeral counts kings of that name, not Sukhothai's first king - Round 4: the subdistrict organisation and the municipality are in fact local bodies at the same tier, neither sits under the other; the game puts the subdistrict body first only because it usually covers a smaller area. A child who swaps these two has not reasoned wrongly; explain this and stress that the provincial body and central government are the wider tiers - Round 3: 'producers make more' and 'price rises' get swapped by children who do not see the high price as the incentive to produce
