What children will practise

Tell Thai culture apart from international or foreign culture through greetings, performing arts, food, sport and festivals, seeing that daily life mixes both while valuing one's own.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, Thai or international/foreign - Wai, handshake, Thai dance, Western music - Green curry, spaghetti, pad thai, hamburger - Muay Thai, football, takraw, basketball - Songkran, Halloween, Loy Krathong, Valentine's Day

How to use it in class

An easy game, good for opening the culture unit; about 3-4 minutes. - Play solo so everyone finishes quickly, then use the time for talk - After round 4, ask which festivals the school celebrates and how foreign festivals became popular in Thailand - If anyone puts takraw under international sport, explain it is a traditional game of Thailand and its neighbours, even though it is now played at the Asian Games - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: takraw is played internationally, so some children put it under international sport - Round 1: most get Western music and Thai dance, but children may hesitate over the handshake because Thais do it too; point out it is a custom borrowed from the West - Round 2: nearly all get pad thai, but spaghetti may feel like home cooking; use it to talk about borrowed foods that become familiar
