Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Put four processes in order: exporting goods, checking news before sharing, solving an environmental problem step by step, and levels of cooperation from community to world.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds, 4 cards each - Make the goods, check quality, clear customs, ship to the destination - See who published it, check the date and context, compare with other news outlets, then decide whether to share - Study the cause, plan a fix, act, follow up and evaluate - Community, country, region, world

How to use it in class

A short game after teaching trade or media literacy; about 4 minutes. - After round 2, have the class walk a real news item the teacher prepared through the four steps - Use round 3 as the frame for a class environment project, e.g. canteen rubbish - In teams, have each team justify its first and last cards - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: 'check the date and context' and 'compare with other outlets' could reasonably swap; a child who swaps them has not misunderstood, so accept their reasoning even if the game marks it wrong - Round 1: customs clearance is an unknown term and gets misplaced; explain it is the check at the border before goods leave - Round 4: country and region may be swapped by children unsure that region means a group of countries; use ASEAN as the example
