What children will practise

Practise reading simple Thai words and sorting them by meaning: people versus places, edible versus not, colour versus size words, and animals that fly versus swim, as groundwork for understanding and answering questions on what is read (ท 1.1 ป.1/3).

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting questions, 4 words each - แม่ (mother) and ครู (teacher) are people; โรงเรียน (school) and ตลาด (market) are places - ข้าว (rice) and กล้วย (banana) can be eaten; หิน (stone) and ดินสอ (pencil) cannot - แดง (red) and เขียว (green) are colours; ใหญ่ (big) and เล็ก (small) are sizes - นก (bird) and ผีเสื้อ (butterfly) fly; ปลา (fish) and กบ (frog) swim

How to use it in class

Use once pupils can read basic words, 5 minutes in team mode so confident readers help others. - Before each item, read the four words aloud with the class - For item 2, pupils mime eating or shake their heads as they hear each word - For item 4, ask whether frogs can live on land too, showing they can do both Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Item 4: hesitating over กบ (frog), which children mostly see hopping on land - Item 1: putting ครู (teacher) with places, thinking of the staff room or school - Item 1: the label ชื่อคน (people's names) may confuse children, since แม่ is not anyone's actual name; explain it means words for people
