What children will practise

Sorts four kinds of distinction in one game: common versus proper nouns, simple versus compound sentences, fact versus opinion, and classifiers used for animals versus things. It builds on indicator ท 4.1 ป.4/1, giving the meaning of words in context.

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, a sorting game: each has four cards to drag into two groups - จังหวัด (province) and แม่น้ำ (river) are common nouns; เชียงใหม่ and เจ้าพระยา are proper nouns - ฉันอ่านหนังสือ (I read) is simple; แม่ทำกับข้าวแต่พ่อล้างจาน (mother cooks but father washes up) is compound - Water boils at 100 degrees is a fact; This subject is too hard is an opinion - ตัว and เชือก are for animals; เล่ม and ผืน are for things

How to use it in class

Works best as an end-of-unit review for Grade 4 grammar, since it pulls four topics into one set. Allow 8-10 minutes. Team play (3-4 per team) suits it: have each team say its reason before dragging a card. After a question many teams miss, ask back: does this word point to one particular thing, or can anyone check this statement? Then reveal the answer. You can play it linked to a class and record the results in the class gradebook, which shows which child still mixes up which topic.

Common sticking points

- Dragging แม่น้ำ (river) into proper nouns because the children know แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา. Point out that แม่น้ำ alone does not say which river. - Putting เชือก with things because they only know it as rope. Recall ช้างสามเชือก, where เชือก is the classifier for elephants. - Calling December is the pleasantest month a fact because December is real. Point to the judging phrase the pleasantest, which is a feeling. - Question 4: some children object that ตัว is also used for shirts and tables, which is true. Accept the point, and explain that the game puts ตัว with animals because it serves almost every animal, while in real use it also counts some things.
