What children will practise

Analytical reading: summarising, abridging, reading a writer's intent from word choice, spotting ควรจะ and น่าจะ as signs of opinion, scanning for key words and choosing a reliable source. Fits ท 1.1 ป.5/3, implied meaning in what is read.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - Summarising means writing the main points more briefly - A writer's intent shows in the words used and what is stressed - ควรจะ (should) and น่าจะ (probably) mark an opinion or a proposal - The most reliable source is the website of the body in charge

How to use it in class

Play it before reading a longer article or news item, so children carry the reading tools in their heads. 5-6 minutes, solo. After question 4, project a short news paragraph and have children circle any ควร or น่าจะ. After question 6, talk about messages forwarded on LINE and where to check them. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: choosing adding your own opinion, confusing a summary with a response. Stress that a summary leaves your opinion out. - Question 3: choosing the writer's name and age, thinking that knowing the writer reveals intent. Show that intent comes from the text. - Question 5: choosing read every word from the beginning because they were taught to read carefully. Explain that looking for one fact calls for scanning.
