Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Understand technology as things people make to make life easier, tell it apart from things that occur in nature, and use electrical appliances safely: no wet hands, an adult unplugs, and read the instructions first.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Technology is things people make for convenience (not only things you plug in) - Which is technology: a fan (not a tree or a rock) - Never touch appliances with wet hands - After use: switch off and have an adult unplug it - Before using something new: ask an adult or read the instructions

How to use it in class

Use in the first lesson on technology around us. 5 minutes. - Before playing, children point to 3 things in the room that people made and 1 from nature - Play as a class on the screen; children hold up 1, 2 or 3 fingers for their choice before the answer is shown - If many miss question 1, hold up a pencil or scissors and ask whether people made it even though it has no plug - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 1, choosing only machines that need plugging in, since children often think technology means electrical things; give examples like scissors, pencils and umbrellas - In question 5, choosing it uses less electricity than by hand, which sounds good, but doing it by hand uses none - In question 3, choosing plug it in yourself every time because they already do it at home
