Before you play
Sort familiar things using a different rule in each round: indoor versus outdoor jobs, occupations working mainly with people versus with things, kitchen versus garden tools, and plants grown to eat versus for decoration, so children learn to read the group headings before deciding.
4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - Washing up and making the bed are indoor jobs; watering the garden and pulling weeds are outdoor jobs - Teacher and nurse work mainly with people; mechanic and carpenter with things - Knife and pan are kitchen tools; hoe and watering can are garden tools - Holy basil and lemongrass are grown to eat; rose and caladium are grown for decoration
Use as a lesson opener in Grade 2 life skills, or as revision before a test. 6 minutes. - Play as a whole class; before each round, read the group headings aloud together, because the rule changes every round - For round 4, if the school grows basil or lemongrass, visit it after playing - If many miss round 2, ask "At work, does this person mostly talk with people or handle tools?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- In round 4, putting caladium under grown to eat because the name sounds like an edible plant; caladium is ornamental and its leaves are poisonous - In round 2, putting nurse under things because nurses use needles and equipment - In round 1, putting watering the garden indoors because some children water pot plants inside
