What children will practise

Look at community occupations from several angles: what each gives the community, the skills it needs, its responsibility to others, and what it produces, so children see how jobs depend on each other.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - Refuse collector with keeping the place clean; bus driver with taking people places - Accountant with calculating and keeping records; mechanic with understanding engines - Trader with selling sound goods and not cheating; driver with driving safely - Weaver with cloth; potter with pottery

How to use it in class

Use in a community jobs unit, after a walk round the school area or a parent talking about their work. 7 minutes. - Play as a team contest; after each round, the winning team explains why that job matters to the community - For round 2, you may need to explain what an accountant is before playing - If many miss round 3, ask "If this person is careless, who gets hurt?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, not knowing what an accountant is and matching by elimination; teach the word before playing - In round 3, swapping doctor and teacher because both answers mention caring or being careful - In round 1, some children may not know what an electrician does
