Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Know what a kitchen garden is, the benefits of growing your own vegetables, what farmyard manure is, what overwatering does, why we pull weeds, and why crops are rotated.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - A kitchen garden is vegetables grown at home to eat - Growing your own: safe, saves money, fresh food - We pull weeds because they take water and food - Overwatering: the roots rot and the plant may die - Crop rotation: the soil stays healthy and soil diseases drop

How to use it in class

Use in a growing unit, before or after the class vegetable plot. 6 minutes. - Play in pairs who discuss before answering, since question 6 is new for Grade 2 - If many miss question 6, compare it to eating the same food every day: the body misses things, and so does the soil - After playing, go and look at weeds in a real plot - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 6, guessing twice as fast because crop rotation is new; teach it first or use it as a discussion question - In question 1, choosing plants that make the house look nice because สวนครัว contains the word สวน (garden) - In question 5, choosing weeds make the soil too hot because they do not know what a weed is
