What children will practise

Order the steps of simple craft and sewing: sewing on a button, making a cloth bag, making a paper flower and putting sewing kit away, starting with preparation and keeping sharp things safe.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Button: thread the needle > knot the end > sew through the holes several times > knot at the back and cut - Cloth bag: measure and cut > hem the edge > sew both sides > turn out and add handles - Paper flower: draw and cut petals > curl them > stick them together > add stem and leaves - Packing away: needle into the pincushion > scissors away > wind the thread > into the box

How to use it in class

Use before a practical lesson sewing buttons or making paper flowers. 8 minutes. - Play solo first, then demonstrate round 1 with a real button and cloth in the game's order - Round 4 can become the end-of-lesson tidy-up routine - If many miss round 1, ask "If we don't knot the end first, what happens to the thread when we sew?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, knotting before threading the needle, from never having sewn - In round 4, swapping scissors and thread, which have no forced order; what matters is that the needle goes away first - In round 2, adding the handles before turning the bag out
