Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose a cooking method to suit the ingredient, know the tastes basic seasonings give, store ingredients in the right place, and pick the right kitchen tool for the job.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - Steaming with fish and vegetables; stir-frying with small-cut vegetables and meat; boiling with clear soups - Lime with sour; chilli with spicy - Fresh meat with the freezer; rice with somewhere dry and closed; vegetable oil with out of the sun - Colander with draining; turner with flipping food in the pan; ladle with serving rice and curry

How to use it in class

Use in a Grade 3 kitchen unit before a real cooking lesson. 6-8 minutes. - Play in pairs, then pass round the real tools from round 4, especially the colander and ladle - For round 2, let children taste a little salt, sugar and lime to confirm (watch for allergies) - If many miss round 1, ask "Do big or small pieces cook quickly in a pan?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, swapping steaming and grilling, since grilled fish and steamed chicken exist too; say the game uses common examples, not the only possible method - In round 4, swapping colander and ladle, since many Grade 3 children do not know the word กระชอน - In round 3, matching fresh vegetables to the freezer, thinking colder always keeps longer
