Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Order the steps of making useful things from scrap and simple crafts: a pencil box from a milk carton, a bookmark, a fermented plant tonic, and mending something broken.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Pencil box: wash the carton > cut to the pattern > cover in coloured paper > decorate and use - Bookmark: cut card to size > decorate > cover in clear tape > punch a hole and tie a ribbon - Plant tonic: gather scraps > mix with sugar and water > cover and ferment > strain and water plants - Mending: find what is broken > get the tools > mend it > test it works

How to use it in class

Use before making the pencil box or bookmark in class, 8 minutes; ask children to bring a milk carton. - Play solo, then follow round 1 or 2 for real - Use round 4 to talk about things children have mended and why you test afterwards - If many miss round 2, ask "If we tape it before decorating, can we draw on the tape?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, punching the hole before taping, thinking it is easier, which leaves the tape covering the hole - In round 1, cutting before washing; point out that washing the whole carton first stops milk spilling - In round 3, children who have never made plant tonic may put straining before fermenting
