What children will practise

Understand basic words about work and income: income, self-employment, capital, profit and honest work, and know that profit is income minus costs.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Income comes from working (not borrowing) - Self-employment means working for yourself, not as an employee, e.g. trading - Capital is the money and things used to start a business - Profit = income minus costs (not costs minus income) - Honest work: lawful and not taking advantage of others

How to use it in class

Use in a lesson on jobs and income, before a classroom market day. 6 minutes. - Play solo, then extend question 5 with real numbers: sold 50 baht, costs 30 baht, what is the profit? - If many miss question 5, write on the board: money in minus money out - Use question 6 to discuss why quick money from cheating is not honest work - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 5, choosing costs less income, remembering subtraction but reversing it; try real numbers and the answer comes out negative - In question 4, choosing the profit after everything is sold, confusing capital with profit - In question 1, choosing borrowing from a bank because money arrives either way; point out that a loan must be paid back
