Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Apply several kinds of life-skills knowledge: fixing small household problems, the meaning of each stage of work (plan, do, check, improve), linking personal qualities to jobs, and picking the right computer program for a task.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - A sticking door with oiling the hinges; a blown bulb with asking an adult to change it - Checking with seeing whether the result matches the aim; improving with putting right what is not yet good - Care and thoroughness with an accountant; enjoying serving people with a receptionist - A spreadsheet with calculating and keeping accounts; presentation software with making slides

How to use it in class

Use at the end of a unit to pull several topics together. 7 minutes. - Play as teams; a team that matches correctly adds one example, such as another job needing perseverance - For round 4, if computers are available, open each program to show it - If many miss round 2, fold paper planes following plan, do, check, improve - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, swapping checking and improving, since both come after doing; point out that checking is looking and improving is fixing - In round 4, swapping word processor and spreadsheet, as many Grade 3 children have not used a spreadsheet - In round 3, swapping perseverance and thoroughness, since both suit many jobs
