What children will practise

Order systematic work processes: the plan, do, check, improve cycle, keeping income and expense accounts, searching online, and running a small stall where you work out costs before setting a price.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Work cycle: plan > do > check the result > improve - Accounts: income > expenses > total each side > see if you are up or short - Searching online: frame the question > choose search words > read and check the source > sum up in your own words - A small stall: decide what to sell > work out the cost > set the price > sell and keep accounts

How to use it in class

Use before a research project or a classroom market. 8 minutes. - Play in teams, then each team uses round 4 to plan selling one real item - Round 3 can be carried out for real on a computer or tablet - If many miss round 4, ask "If you don't know what the goods cost, how can you set a price that makes a profit?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 4, setting the price before working out the cost, since children price by what they want to earn; try an example priced below cost - In round 2, swapping income and expenses; in real life you record as things happen, so the game's order is a convention rather than a rule - In round 3, choosing search words before framing the question, out of habit of typing straight away
