Before you play
Understand basic farming and production: what organic farming is and why it helps, crop rotation, compost, keeping animals with their welfare in mind, and why produce is processed.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Organic farming means no synthetic chemicals - Crop rotation keeps the soil fertile and breaks the disease cycle - Compost is made of composted plant and food scraps - Keeping animals: food, water, a clean home and welfare - Processing produce: it keeps longer and is worth more
Use in the Grade 4 farming unit, before or after visiting the school plot or compost heap. 6 minutes. - Play solo, then children give local examples of processing for question 6, such as dried bananas or mango paste - If many miss question 3, draw one plot growing a different crop each season on the board - Use question 5 to discuss whether animals at home get all four things - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- In question 6, choosing more nutrients than fresh, thinking processed is better; point out that processing often reduces some nutrients - In question 2, choosing always a bigger harvest, believing organic is best in every way - In question 4, confusing compost with farmyard manure, met in Grade 2
