Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Know basic hand tools and choose the right one for a problem, understand the reasons behind workshop safety rules, and see the value of repairing instead of throwing away.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - Screwdriver with driving and loosening screws; tape measure with measuring - A loose screw with a screwdriver; a cable too long with cutting pliers - Safety glasses with keeping debris out of your eyes; switching off the breaker with avoiding a shock - Changing the bulb with cheaper than replacing the fitting; sealing a leak with less water lost

How to use it in class

Use in the Grade 4 workshop unit before a practical lesson. 6-8 minutes. - Lay real tools at the front, play as a class, and have a child who answers correctly hold up that tool - Use round 3 as the safety rules for the practical - If many miss round 2, ask "Does this problem need turning, hammering, cutting or measuring?" - Item 2 involves electrical cable. Only an adult or electrician may do it; children must never cut or handle live wiring - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, swapping pliers and screwdriver, since some children turn screws with pliers at home - In round 3, swapping gloves and adult supervision, because preventing cuts and preventing accidents look alike; point out that gloves protect only the hands - In round 4, swapping mending clothes and mending a toy, since both mean no need to buy new
