What children will practise

Manage money with a plan: budget ahead, split money into spending, saving and sharing, understand compound interest, judge which debt is reasonable, understand investment risk, and beware get-rich-quick offers.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Budgeting is planning ahead how money will be spent - A basic split: spending, saving and sharing - Compound interest is worked out on the original plus earlier interest - More defensible debt: for education or earning income - Certain quick riches: be careful, high returns usually mean high risk

How to use it in class

Use in the Grade 4 money unit. 6-8 minutes. - Before question 3, work a simple example on the board: deposit 100 baht, earn 10 baht interest a year; in year two interest is worked out on 110 baht - Play in pairs who explain their reasoning before questions 4 and 5 - If many miss question 5, ask "If an investment might return less than you hoped, what do we call that?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 3, choosing interest on the original amount only, the more familiar kind; teach a number example before playing - In question 1, choosing counting money already spent, confusing a budget with keeping accounts - In question 6, choosing trust it if you know the person, since children trust people close to them
