What children will practise

Choose a data display to fit its purpose, understand the stages of collecting data, fix common presentation problems, and know basic data vocabulary.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - Bar chart with comparing groups; pie chart with parts of a whole; table with figures read exactly - Designing the questionnaire with on-point data; analysing with answering the question - Hard-to-read chart with labelling axes and units; text-heavy slide with cutting to the key points - Raw data with not yet processed; source with where the data came from

How to use it in class

Use before children run a class survey and present the results. 7 minutes. - Play in pairs, then each pair picks a chart for its own survey using round 1 - Use round 3 as a checklist for slides before presenting - If many miss round 1, draw the same data as a bar chart and a pie chart to compare - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, swapping framing the question and designing the questionnaire, since you know what to collect and the data answers the point are close - In round 4, swapping processing and information, as both answers describe usable data - In round 1, swapping bar chart and table, since both show figures for several groups
