Sort housework by how often it is done, cleaning products by safety, things to keep away from young children, and preventive versus repair maintenance, to look after a home safely and systematically.
What's in the worksheet
4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - Washing up and making the bed are daily; washing window screens and blankets are occasional - Washing-up liquid and soap are for general use; bathroom cleaner and bleach need special care - Medicine and cleaning products go out of children's reach - Monthly drain cleaning and checking wiring prevent problems; clearing a blocked drain and replacing burnt wiring fix them
How to use it in class
Use in the Grade 5 housework unit, or before children check safety in their own homes. 6 minutes. - Play as a class, then children check at home where medicines and cleaners are kept - For round 2, stress never mixing bathroom cleaner with bleach, as it gives off toxic gas - If many miss round 4, ask "Is this done before there is a problem, or because there already is one?" - Item 4 is for an electrician or adult only. Children must never repair wiring or experiment with mains electricity - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
Common sticking points
- In round 4, putting checking the wiring under fixing, since it is about wiring like replacing burnt wiring - In round 2, putting washing-up liquid under special care because it is also a chemical; agree it should be kept out of eyes, but it is for general use - In round 1, putting washing blankets under daily, thinking it is like washing clothes
