What children will practise

Choose a career and plan your life sensibly: weigh aptitude, interests and job opportunities, know what to do when you like a job you are not yet good at, value work experience, tell short- from long-term plans, and revise plans that go off course.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Choosing a career: aptitude, interests and job-market opportunities - Liking a job you are not good at: practise and assess yourself - Work experience: see the real work before deciding - Short- versus long-term plans differ in time span - A careers adviser gives information and views we can't see (not decide for us)

How to use it in class

Use in a guidance lesson before Grade 6 children choose a secondary school or study track. 6 minutes. - Play solo, then children write two jobs they are interested in, with the strengths they have and those to develop - For question 2, draw on experience, e.g. loving music but not yet playing well - If many miss question 1, ask "If the pay is good but you dislike it and can't do it, will you last?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 1, choosing only high pay, having heard adults stress salary - In question 2, choosing give up at once, since children this age judge themselves quickly - In question 3, choosing sure to be hired after graduating, thinking work experience reserves a job
