What children will practise

Practises telling loud from soft sounds, understanding beat as a sound repeating at an even pace, telling struck from blown instruments, and good manners for group singing and the national anthem. Fits indicator ศ 2.1 ป.1/1 on sources of sound.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - How do loud and soft sounds differ? (in strength) - What is the beat in music? (a sound repeating at an even pace) - Which instrument is blown? (khlui, the Thai flute) - How should the Thai national anthem be sung? (standing straight, with respect)

How to use it in class

Play in a music lesson after children have clapped along to a beat, about 7 minutes, whole class. Before the loud and soft question, tap the desk loudly then softly. Before the beat question, have everyone clap 8 even claps. If the beat question goes badly, have children put a hand on their chest and feel their heartbeat, as the game's explanation suggests. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Loud versus soft: children often pick "pitch" because everyday Thai mixes up "high voice" and "loud voice". Sing one note loudly then softly, then a high note softly. - Beat: the distractor "high and low sounds in a row" describes melody, not beat. Contrast clapping (beat) with humming (melody). - National anthem: some pick "sit up straight and sing quietly". Recall standing still for the flag each morning.
