What children will practise

Get along with family and friends: what to do in common situations, each family member's role, how good and bad behaviour comes back to us, and ways of communicating that reduce conflict.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Situation to response, e.g. a sad friend with comforting and listening, our mistake with apologising and fixing it - Role to duty, e.g. older sibling with setting a good example, child with age-appropriate chores - Behaviour to result, e.g. lying with losing trust, bullying with nobody wanting to play - Way of communicating, e.g. listening to the end when a friend is telling a story

How to use it in class

Use in the family and friends unit; about 5-6 minutes. - Read every card aloud and play as a class on screen - For round 2, have children share chores they do at home; be mindful of children whose families are not mother-father-child, and talk of carers too - For round 4, have pairs practise listening: one tells a short story, the other listens without interrupting - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: older and younger sibling duties (setting an example, obeying and helping) may mean little to only children, who will guess - Round 2: child and younger sibling are both children at home, and age-appropriate chores fit a younger sibling too, so they may swap; that is not wrong thinking, so accept it and say which pairing the game counts - Round 4: saying how you feel and starting a calm talk may be swapped, since both are used when there is trouble with a friend - Round 1: for 'a friend wronged us', some expect forgiveness, which is not an option here
